KIA (almost) reveals all-new XCeed crossover

KIA’s Ceed family will welcome its fourth and newest member this summer – the XCeed crossover. It will join the Ceed Sportswagon and ProCeed shooting brake as spin-offs of the highly-rated Ceed hatchback, and slot in directly below the Sportage SUV in KIA’s UK model line-up.

The Korean automaker this week revealed just this single image of the new Ceed-based crossover model. It shows a low-riding, sporty coupe-like design, the full reveal of which will take place on 26th June, along with the release of the techs and specs across the XCeed range which will go on sale later this year.

The KIA XCeed has a lower ride height than many crossovers which, according to the company’s European CEO, makes it ‘innately more desirable’. All the standard crossover design cues are there; a squared-off bonnet, black plastic body mouldings, roof rails and, is likely to sport front and rear scuff plates. The image also features chrome trim on the window line and bodywork, large alloy wheels and LED headlights, although these are likely to be reserved for higher-spec cars.

We can expect the driving position of the XCeed to be slightly higher than the Ceed hatchback, emphasising its crossover position in the Ceed family line-up. KIA promises a sporty driving experience and says that the XCeed will also be as practical as its rivals, which will include the Ford Focus Active, Renault Captur and Citroen C3 Aircross.

For its powertrain line-up, the KIA XCeed is likely to borrow heavily from the engine range of the current Ceed, meaning the range-entry model is likely to deploy the same three-cylinder, 1.0-litre 118hp turbocharged petrol engine. A four-pot 1.6-litre CRDi turbodiesel is also likely to be offered.

The XCeed is based on the five-door Ceed hatchback, which rides on the same platform as the Hyundai i30 and other world-market KIAs. Because of that and particularly because it affects fuel economy, all-wheel drive is unlikely to be offered on the XCeed. However, electronic driving modes for light off-road, snow, and gravel will probably feature.

We’ll bring more details for the new KIA XCeed as they become available and a first-drive impression from its media launch once we get behind the wheel.
