Driving In Lockdown: Be Safe, Obey The Speed Limits!24 April 2020
Despite the Government placing the UK on lockdown back in March, some of the nation’s motorists are seeing this as an opportunity to turn our roads into their very own racetrack.
As the majority of our roads are now seeing significantly less traffic than usual (see traffic drop details in our blog here) – certain motorists have been taking advantage of the quieter roads to get out in their cars and treat them as racetracks rather than observing the national speed limits.
Recent reports have revealed the number of motorists exceeding speed limits has doubled in some parts of the UK since the start of the coronavirus lockdown – with one report even revealing a motorist had been clocked doing a speed of 151mph.
So, we wanted to remind you of the government guidelines of when people are allowed to leave their house:
- to shop for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible
- for any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person
- to travel to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home
When using your cars for any of the above journeys – motorists must observe the national speed limits by law.
