Telsa have announced a new model, which will hit the roads in 2020 and arrive here in the UK by 2022. The Model Y is a compact SUV; based on the current Model 3 platform, the car will feature the same design ethos with a centralised 15” display and clean-looking dashboard. The Model Y is 10% bigger than the Model 3, giving seating for 7 when the optional third-row is selected.
As the SUV market-sector grows, the Model Y is key for Tesla and will be pitched against the European manufacturers’ BMW X3, Audi Q5 and the VW Tiguan, whilst also competing with other electric models from the Jaguar I-PACE and Audi E-Tron through to the new VW ID. Crozz SUV which is also due in the UK in 2022.
The powertrain in the Model Y comes with a long-range option, giving over 300 miles range and the standard model has an equally-impressive range of close to 230 miles; the Model Y will take full advantage of the new 3rd generation superchargers, which are able to give 75 miles charge in just five minutes. The performance model comes with 20” Performance Wheels and a top speed of 150mph.
As the Model Y is a compact SUV, it comes with All Wheel Drive, from its dual motors which are independently digitally-controlled and distribute the torque to the front and rear wheels, allowing the fastest models to reach 60mph in just 3.5 seconds!
