DVLA Backlog23 July 2021
Following the suspension of driving tests during the lockdown periods over the last 16 months, the DVLA is now in further turmoil with a large backlog of paper applications. The processing of paper applications has been hampered by strikes and walks outs taking place..
The backlog has left some motorists to be unable to drive for months, whilst others have complained about missing or unreturned documents. Digital applications have been unaffected by the staffing issues at the DVLA.
The DVLA does state that you can continue to drive within your current licence restrictions, whilst a paper application is being processed. You must not drive if you've been instructed by a doctor or optician to not drive whilst the application is being processed; as many medical professionals use paper-based applications when interacting with the DVLA.
