Car Dimensions23 January 2021
Following on from our Then Vs Now research, we were surprised how vehicles have grown and so have delved a bit deeper into car dimensions.
The difference in width isn't as dramatic as length with the Kia Picanto, which is only 41cm narrower, but the Volvo XC90 has a long way to go before reaching the UK Vehicle width limit which is currently 2.55m. With width restrictions in place in some residential areas at 6'6" to stop large vans and commercial vehicles entering, it's going to be a tight squeeze for some SUVs but plane sailing for the Picanto.
Comparing the Tesla Model S with ludicrous mode engaged to the Mitsubishi Mirage is a little unfair, but by our rough calculations the Model S will get to 60 and back to 0 whilst the Mirage is still trying to get to 60! That aside, they're both completely different cars, designed and built for different scenarios, with speed being only relative to conditions and local limits.
As we move to the electric era in motoring, do you think all cars will be able to do sub 5 second 0-60 times? Will cars start to become smaller, thanks to the advancements in materials? We'd love to hear your thoughts on this via our social media channels.
