By Wayne Gorrett

The Affalterbach outfit have evidently been busy as today, we have the dessert course of our horsepower smorgasbord, with news that the order books for the long-awaited Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster have opened.

Following closely on the heels of the refreshed 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Coupé, the rag-topped convertible sits atop the four model GT Roadster line-up (GT, GTS and GTC), and is now available to order.

The GT R Roadster deploys the same hand-built twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine as the Coupé, with its output of 585hp and 700Nm of torque. It shift from 0 to 62mph in just 3.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 197mph. It can achieve between 16.9 and 22.6mpg on the combined WLTP cycle and emits 284g/km of CO2 (NEDC).

The GT R Roadster features a triple-layered light-weight fabric soft top with a structure consisting of aluminium, magnesium and steel which is fitted with an acoustic mat to reduce noise. The soft top can be opened and closed within 11 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 31 mph. It is available in a choice of three colours: black, red or beige.

The GT R Roadster comes as standard with LED headlights with ‘adaptive high beam assist’, and active aerodynamics which allow more precise handling and better grip levels. Inside, there’s AMG performance seats swathed in Nappa leather upholstery, climatised seats with memory package and air scarves with neck level heating.

A 10.25-inch multimedia display also controls the Burmester surround sound system and a dominant 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster face the driver. There’s also an AMG Interior Night package, AMG matt carbon fibre trim including centre console and door trim strip in carbon fibre, and Dinamica roof liner.

For added driver confidence, there’s a ‘driving assistance pack’ which includes ‘active distance’ and blind spot assist. Finishing touches also include yellow brake calipers, an AMG performance exhaust, an AMG Drive Unit including traction control, while the rear aerofoil is manually adjustable. Customers can also opt for the AMG high-performance ceramic composite braking system.
