Omoda vs Jaecoo - They're the new kids on the block but are they any good?

Omoda and Jaecoo are getting serious traction online. Not only are our team receiving daily calls asking for more information, traffic to our site alone for Omoda is up +5000% and similarly Jaecoo +611%.

We’ve pulled together a list of the most common questions we’re getting (yes, we know the J7 looks like a Range Rover and it IS confusing that the J7 only has 5 seats but the new J9 has 7 seats… we’re as confused as you and we’ll cover it all here in this guide.

So, let's start with the basics.

Who are Jaecoo and Omoda and why are they becoming popular in the UK?

Both are sub-brands of Chery Automobile, one of China’s biggest car manufacturers.

Founded in 1997 and is the 4th largest carmaker in China. They sold 2.6 million vehicles in 2024 alone and is the largest Chinese automotive exporter, so while these brands are new to us, they’re not new globally.

Chery has been exporting their vehicles since the early 2000s to more than 80 countries and regions and in 2024 when they began their expansion into the UK. Chery began by launching Omoda with their SUV, the C5. Following that, in January 2025 they launched Jaecoo with the release of the J7.

Why have two separate brands?

Simply to target different customers.

  • Jaecoo is targeted at drivers who lead a more adventurous, offroad lifestyle, regularly go camping, surfing or live in rural areas, competitors offering similar aesthetics are Land Rover Discovery, Suzuki Jimny, Jeep Cheroke and the KIA Sportage

Why are they so cheap?

The Omoda 5 and E5 range from £25,000–£33,000 and Jaecoo J7 is only slightly more expensive between £30,000–£35,000.

Lower costs doesn’t always mean lacking in quality. Chery Autos own pretty much all of the manufacturing process and supply chain, they don’t rely on third-party suppliers or expensive outsourcing, they do it mostly themselves, a luxury other manufacturers don’t have. Owning every part of the process allows them to reduce costs without compromising on quality and technology.

Is the J7 a copy of a Range Rover?

The resemblance is definitely there, especially in its big boxy grille and imposing size but the J7 isn't trying to be a Range Rover clone. It borrows the premium aggressive off-road look but blends it with Chery’s own design, tech and a much lower price tag. You’re getting a similar aesthetic and tech feel, just without the six-figure price.

Are Jaecoo and Omoda cars any good?

Short answer? Yes.

Both brands offer really nice modern interiors, strong build quality, loads of tech, and are great value for money. Early reviews and test drives in the UK have been largely positive across the board, with how they drive, how comfortable and roomy they are as well as some great tech additions.

They’re not trying to compete with Mercedes or Audi yet—but they’re more than holding their own against mainstream SUVs. And with a 7-year/100,000-mile warranty, they’re backing their quality too.
