With recent reports from the Department for Transport stating that nearly half a million vehicles are being driven on UK roads without vehicle tax, we thought we would remind you about the importance of keeping your vehicle taxed and how to check its current status.
It's important to remember that there are a number of legal requirements a vehicle needs to meet before being driven on UK roads and they include:
- be registered with DVLA
- have up to date vehicle tax (check if your vehicle is taxed online)
- have a current MOT certificate (if your vehicle needs one)
- be roadworthy
Car tax, known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is a tax placed on vehicle owners to help fund road maintenance and other motoring related items including public transport and infrastructure.
The amount of tax you pay is based on the type of vehicle you drive and the type of fuel it uses. The pricing structure is designed to encourage the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles by imposing higher taxes on those with higher emissions. In this way, valid car tax contributes to environmental initiatives and helps reduce the carbon footprint of the country's vehicles.
It's really important to remember failing to correctly tax a vehicle can result in penalties, fines, or even the vehicle being clamped or impounded. Valid car tax is also a condition for insurance policy validity so essential.
So take the opportunity to check your current car tax position and if needed, get it sorted to day.
