New Nissan Micra: The Familiar Name Returns as an EV

The Nissan Micra is back, but the latest generation is a very different proposition from the Micras we've known before. The all-new model is fully electric and shares its underpinnings with the Renault 5 and Alpine A290. Look closely and you might recognise the basic shape, but Nissan has given the Micra plenty of its own personality. The car we spent time with was finished in Authentic Blue with a contrasting black roof, while one of our favourite exterior details is the circular lighting at the front and rear. It's a distinctive feature that also gives a subtle nod to previous generations of the Micra. There are two trim levels to choose from – Engage and Advance – with our car being the range-topping Advance. Inside, Nissan has made clever use of the Micra's compact dimensions. Slim-profile sports seats are designed to maximise the available space, while the front of the cabin is filled with useful little storage solutions. There's an adjustable cupholder, wireless phone charging on our Advance model and even a key tray featuring a Mount Fuji design – exactly the kind of small, quirky touch that gives the cabin a little more character. Technology is covered by a large infotainment screen with Google Maps built in, while the driver gets a crisp and customisable display. The Micra's compact dimensions also make sense once you get it out on the road. We found it genuinely fun to drive, with a responsive feel and small footprint that makes it easy to manoeuvre. Multiple drive modes give you something to play with too, but fundamentally this feels like a car that's particularly at home in and around town. Both Engage and Advance models are available with a choice of two batteries. The 42kWh battery offers up to 198 miles of range, while stepping up to the larger 52kWh battery increases that figure to as much as 260 miles. Then there's the price – arguably one of the biggest headlines surrounding the new Micra. Prices start at just under £25,000, while even the range-topping version comes in below £30,000. At a time when affordability remains one of the biggest considerations for drivers thinking about switching to electric, that puts the Micra in an interesting position. It may share its foundations with some familiar cars, but between the retro-inspired circular lights, clever interior details, fun driving experience and competitive pricing, Nissan has worked to give the new Micra an identity of its own.
