Startling Rise in Catalytic Converter Thefts26 September 2020
In 2019, there were 13,000 thefts of catalytic converters – a staggering 550 per cent increase from the previous year.
So while the sales of plug-in and self-charging hybrid cars increase, car thieves are welcoming the increase in popularity and taking advantage of the increase in catalytic converters available.
The huge spike in these thefts is perceived to be as a result of the value of the previous metals that catalytic converters are made from.
Catayltic converters turn harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, in a car’s exhaust into less dangerous substances like carbon dioxide and water vapour.
Reports within the media suggest that scrap dealers believe the sale of these stolen items are taking place on the black market of the scrap world.
So, if you have a one of these vehicles – a plug-in or self-charging hybrid car – please make sure you protect your car and reduce the chance of falling victim to this crime.
