In the first stages of getting the region ready for its new clean air zone, which is expected to launch in May 2022, number-plate-recognition cameras have been installed by the city region.
The first of the number plate cameras were installed in the region back in August, with around 850 more cameras being installed to capture vehicles entering the zone, allowing the enforcement of non-payment of daily charges. Signage for the clean air zone has also started to be installed across the region.
The new Greater Manchester wide daily-charging scheme will be a Category C Clean Air Zone, with all ten of the local authorities approving the Clean Air Plan.
Category C - Includes
Buses, Coaches, Taxis, Private Hire Vehicles, Heavy Goods Vehicles, Vans and Minibuses.
Private Cars are not included.
The Clean Air Zone, is a key component in the ‘northern powerhouse green revolution’, alongside other similar zones already in force across the UK.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has confirmed a financial support scheme will be launched in November to help local businesses, people and organisations in the area to upgrade their vehicles to cleaner less-polluting ones, meaning they can travel within the clean air zone without occurring daily costs. A £120m pot has been created to help upgrade non-compliant vehicles.
An accredited dealership scheme has been announced, and TfGM is seeking dealers to join the free scheme. The scheme is open to independent, franchised and manufacturer-backed dealerships stocking new and used compliant vehicles, with the hope to get those eligible for financial support upgraded to compliant vehicles as quickly and easily as possible.
In addition to the vehicles currently falling within the charging scheme, there will be a second consultation period on whether to include M1/M1 SP vehicles into the charging structure, these vehicles are those classed as motor caravans.
