The latest UK number plate has officially arrived, with new cars registered from 1st September 2026 now receiving the new 76 registration.
For anyone thinking about changing their car, September is always an interesting month. It is one of only two points in the year when the UK registration plate changes and traditionally one of the busiest periods for new cars hitting the road.
But what exactly does the 76 plate mean, which cars will receive one and does having the newest registration actually matter if you are leasing?
What is the new 76 plate?
The 76 registration applies to new vehicles first registered between 1 September 2026 and the end of February 2027. It replaces the 26 plate, which was used for vehicles registered between March and August this year.
The current registration system has been used since 2001.
A standard UK registration contains two letters showing where the vehicle was first registered, followed by two numbers showing its age and then three randomly allocated letters.
For vehicles registered between March and August, the two numbers correspond with the year. Cars registered from March 2026 therefore received a 26 plate.
For September registrations, 50 is added to the year number, giving us 76 for September 2026. The next change will take place in March 2027 when the 27 plate arrives.
Why September is a big month for new cars
The September plate change has traditionally been an important point in the UK motoring calendar.
It is a popular time for drivers to change their vehicles and manufacturers, retailers and leasing providers often have significant volumes of new cars entering the market around the registration change.
The arrival of the 76 plate has already been attracting attention across the UK motoring press, with Auto Express highlighting the new registration ahead of its introduction and Autocar focusing on the offers and discounts that can appear around a September plate change.
For drivers, however, the important thing is not simply having the newest number plate. September can also be a useful time to look at the wider choice of vehicles and offers available.
The new plate arrives as the UK car market continues to grow
This year's September change also arrives at an interesting time for the UK new car market.
The latest figures available from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show 1,294,499 new cars had been registered during the first seven months of 2026, up 9.5% compared with the same period in 2025.
There has been particularly strong growth in electric cars.
Battery electric vehicle registrations reached 327,683 between January and July, an increase of 28.7% year on year. Plug in hybrid registrations increased by 37.7%, while petrol registrations fell by 3% and diesel registrations were down 11.4%.
July alone saw 43,106 new battery electric cars registered, 44.5% more than in July 2025. Electric cars accounted for 27.5% of all new registrations during the month.
For anyone looking at a new 76 plate car, that means the choice is increasingly diverse, whether you want petrol, hybrid, plug in hybrid or fully electric.
Choose the car and the deal that works best for you.
Whether that means a brand new 76 plate model, an in stock 26 plate car offering particularly good value or making the switch to electric, September could be a great time to start looking.
