Rules Come into Force for Towing

You may remember, in September 2021 we wrote a blog that revealed new rules which were set to come into force around towing and they were finally confirmed in December 2021.

We thought it was worth reminding you what has changed.

In essence, if you passed your car driving test on or after 1st January 1997 and have a category B car license, you can now tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg MAM (maximum authorised mass) without the need to pass a separate test.

The DVLA will update your driving documents to reflect the change and this will be evident when you next renew your photocard license.

Its worth noting, if you ‘re learning to drive and think that towing is something you want to do or think you may need to do at some point, its worth asking your driving instructor for specific training.
