We’ve grown to expect connectivity in modern cars when buying a new vehicle. Apple CarPlay is a system many people use to link their smartphones and in-car infotainment system. But what about people that don’t have an iPhone?
Fortunately, Google has recently announced broader options for those with Android systems. Earlier this week, Google unveiled its latest Android Auto application that can be integrated into your car’s infotainment display. This new experience is set to bring drivers more features and improvements for an easy-to-use interface that connects in an instant.
What is the new Android Auto experience?
If you have Android Auto set up on your phone, you may have spotted the update, which started rolling out on 5th January. This update is packed with design revisions and enhancements to make your driving experience more personalised.
Google has said the application would focus on three goals for drivers. First is navigation. Next is better communication, and lastly, entertainment, such as music and podcasts.
Using a phone and infotainment to get from A to B is a primary aspect of driver usage. So, Google Maps is now closer to the driver, which makes the interface clearer and more helpful for glancing over. This can be set up for left- or right-handed drive vehicles in split-screen mode.
The entertainment side of things features a new media card. This includes the ability to add your favourite album artwork. Plus, there’s a quick launcher to see the most used apps more quickly.
Compatible with most car brands
The Android Auto experience has broadened its horizons and now pairs with most car brands. This link between car and phone also gives drivers the option of a split-screen layout. Plus, the app adapts to fit most screen sizes. So, it won’t look odd whether you have a portrait or landscape screen.
Updates to Google Assistant
To make things even easier while you’re on the go, Google Assistant has some handy enhancements. It now provides smart suggestions based on activity. For example, there are missed call reminders, arrival time sharing, and access to music, all with simple commands.
Other capabilities for Android Auto
There have been a few other tweaks on-screen. For example, shortcuts make it quicker to reply to messages or to call your contacts. Users also requested a progress bar in the music and podcasts area, so there’s the option to skip within the song or episode.
In addition, Google is starting to roll out the ability to make calls using WhatsApp with the app. This will begin with the latest Samsung and Pixel phones.
Digital car keys with Android Auto
This feature is already available on Pixel phones using Android. However, sharing digital car keys will now expand to Samsung and Xiaomi users. Sharing a digital car key allows trusted friends and family to access your vehicle.
BMW drivers will see this benefit immediately, as the latest update will allow BMW’s Digital Keys to be shared between Apple and Android phones.
Innovative features with Google built-in
Some models don’t require you to have a smartphone for connection – they already have Google integrated into onboard systems.
Google built-in is available through some car brands, providing personalised and efficient connectivity as soon as you get behind the wheel.
In the recent Android Auto update, Google built-in has benefited from some additions and enhancements such as:
More models offering Google built-in
More carmakers are introducing Google built-in within operating systems. Honda is the latest to join the ranks. Other brands with this feature include Volvo, Polestar, GMC, Renault and Chevrolet.
Recent news suggests Porsche is considering Google software integration. Others are expected to include this connectivity in the future.
Better navigation
The Waze app is launching a new application in selected models which works with Google built-in. This opens up a more advanced navigation and maps feature with real-time notifications, routing options and alerts.
It provides a seamless connection straight to the car display screen. So there’s no need to connect your phone or worry about the battery running out. It’s currently only available in selected Renault models. But Waze hopes to extend this further as more users engage with the app.
Google also has a new HD map available in some models with Google built-in. This feature offers precise and detailed road markers, including signs and barriers. Using this technology will advance and assist future moves to autonomous driving technology.
Entertainment
The large touchscreen on your dashboard is great for watching the latest movies, especially if you’re waiting to charge up. In addition, Google Play is available via Google built-in and already homes apps such as Tubi and MGM+. In the near future, other apps will be available such as YouTube, to give users more choices.
How to connect to Android Auto
If you’re eager to take advantage of the new updates on Android Auto, connecting to your car is simple. First, make sure your car or stereo is compatible. Fortunately, more models are enabling Android connectivity.
Next, check your phone. If you have Android 9, you’ll need to install the app. Android 10 has it already built in.
Lastly, connect your phone to your car. This is typically done with a USB cable, or in some cases, you can connect wirelessly. Once connected, you should see the Android Auto display pop-up on your dashboard screen. Then, you are good to go!
If you have a car with Google built-in, there’s no need to worry about installing anything or connecting your phone – everything is ready to go as soon as you get in the car.
