Electric Pickup Trucks To Watch Out For

Electric cars and vans are gaining traction in the UK. But what about pickup trucks?

It’s been a little quiet on this front over the past few years. However, manufacturers haven’t been sitting by and letting this vehicle fade into the distance, far from it. In fact, alongside the big carmakers, lesser-known companies are making waves in this area.

Of course, as the land of the pickup, the US is a front-runner with an impressive electric truck set to hit the UK either this year or next. Other options from China could make their way to our streets, but unfortunately, there are no concrete plans as yet.

Why are electric trucks taking so long to develop?

The main reason why this vehicle is taking a lot longer to manufacture than cars and vans is that they’re more challenging to build.

There are all sorts of considerations in the design to think about, such as battery weight, 4x4 system placement and range. Manufacturers need to ensure a pickup is, of course, still a pickup and does what it was originally designed to do.

In the UK, we also have payload-rating requirements, and for tax rules, commercial pickups need to meet a 1-tonne payload rating. So, placing a heavy electric battery into the mix will affect the weight allowance dramatically.

The range is also a major factor in truck development. As this vehicle is typically used for rough terrain or even off-grid locations, the miles per charge need to be high, so you don’t end up stranded.

Overall, it’s a lot to unpack. But electrified trucks are in the making. However, it is unclear whether they’ll be available to buy here. So, in the meantime, we’ll explore what’s happening in the world of electric pickups and keep our fingers crossed we get to see some of these models in the flesh very soon.

Rivian R1T

Rivian is a new name in the auto industry, but it’s already causing a stir with its electric adventure vehicles. Originating in California, the electric vehicle company may be small at the moment, but it’s backed by some big names you might know – Ford and Amazon.

Freddie Flintoff test drove the Rivian for Top Gear earlier in the year and loved it so much – he named it his favourite electric vehicle in the 2022 TopGear.com Electric Awards. It was initially thought that this model wasn’t heading for UK shores. But, it’s now planned to be here later this year or early next year.

The truck is impressive and ticks many boxes for those that love pickup looks and road presence. You get a choice of models in the range, but its headliner showcases Quad Core technology and around 750hp. For a truck, it’s fast – reaching 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. You don’t have to worry too much about range, as it packs between 250 and 400 miles depending on the model. The only downside is the price, which will set you back around £70,000.

Maxus T90 EV

Hailing from China, the Maxus T90 EV is a truck offering a contemporary vibe. It’s not as powerful as others in the market due to its single 130kW electric motor. So, we’re talking around 177hp, which isn’t a lot for its size. Range is an average of 220 miles – reasonable if you’re using it for everyday driving. However, if you’re looking for 4-wheel drive capabilities, this might not be the best option, as it’s rear-wheel drive.

The Maxus T90 EV is coming to the UK, and you can order it now, with delivery expected in early 2023. Prices start from £49,950 plus VAT.

Ford F-150 Lightning

In the US, the Ford F-150 is one of its best sellers. So, it’s no surprise they’ve innovated with an electric version. Adding Lightning to the name perfectly sums up this model, as its dual-motor 563hp system provides more torque than its combustion counterpart.

Its design means it’s entirely fit for purpose, offering plenty of room for tools and storage. This model is also reasonably priced at around $40,000 or £28,000. But don’t get your hopes up on this one. It’s not likely to grace our shores, owing to the fact it’s thought to be too big for our roads.

Tesla Cybertruck

Can you really class the Tesla Cybertruck as a pickup in terms of looks – we’re undecided! But that’s what the brand is potentially bringing to the table. This unique model is made from stainless steel and is understood to have a payload exceeding 1,500kg. In addition, there are numerous motors available, including single, dual and tri options. Plus, you get Tesla’s renowned range of between 250 and 500 miles.

Unfortunately, there’s a massive amount of uncertainty circulating this model as it’s been pushed back numerous times. It’s unclear whether the UK will see it either. However, its intriguing design makes the wait worthwhile.

GMC Hummer

While the conventional Hummer lost its touch around a decade ago, GMC has revived the brand to bring an all-new supertruck to the market. As you’d expect, it’s a big piece of kit, but it’s lost its aggressive vibe to showcase a more lifestyle-friendly aesthetic. As well as size, the brand hasn’t scrimped on performance either, with GMC estimating up to 1,000hp from its motor and 350+ miles range between charges. There’s a lot to like about this impressive truck. However, you’ll have to admire it from afar, as it’s not likely to be available in the UK.

Find your ideal pickup with Leasing Options

While most of the pickups available in the UK don’t come in an electric version yet, there are some great alternatives to consider while you wait. Popular models from Ford and Toyota offer great fuel economy and impressive performance. Plus, each has four-wheel drive capability and a comfortable ride set-up.
