Clash of the Cupras: Ateca vs. Formentor - Unveiling the Battle of the Sporty SUVs

In the world of performance-oriented SUVs, Cupra, the high-performance sub-brand of SEAT, has been making waves with its dynamic line-up. Two of its standout models, the Cupra Formentor and the Cupra Ateca, go head-to-head in a clash of style, power, and driving excitement. In this blog post, we'll dissect the features, performance, and overall appeal of these two sporty SUVs to help you decide which one might be the perfect fit for your driving preferences.

Design and Exterior:

Both the Cupra Formentor and Cupra Ateca boast a design that exudes sportiness and style. The Formentor, however, takes a more futuristic approach with its coupe-like profile, aggressive lines, and distinctive LED lighting elements. On the other hand, the Ateca leans towards a more conventional SUV appearance but still manages to radiate a sense of athleticism with its bold grille, sharp creases, and dual exhaust pipes. The choice here ultimately comes down to whether you prefer the avant-garde appeal of the Formentor or the more traditional, yet still sporty, aesthetics of the Ateca.

Interior and Comfort:

Inside the cabins of both models, you’ll find a blend of sophistication and performance-oriented design. The Formentor leans towards a more driver-focused cockpit, featuring a high-tech infotainment system, digital cockpit display, and a sportier seating position. The controls for the Formentor are also very modern with climate controls and heated seats both being operated from the touch screen protruding out of the dashboard. The Formentor also favours a switch style shifter on the automatic models as well as touch sensitive controls for the lights. Ateca, while also providing a driver-centric environment, places a slightly greater emphasis on practicality and family-friendliness with its spacious interior and comfortable seating for both front and rear passengers. Controls for things like the climate control and heated seats are traditional buttons rather than in the infotainment system. The ‘shifter’ for the automatic is also a handle/stick which most people will be accustomed to and the lights are controlled by a dial.

Performance:

Under the hood, both the Cupra Formentor and Cupra Ateca deliver exhilarating performance, but with some differences. They both offer a range of three engine sizes sharing an economically friendly 1.5L and a 2.0L performance engine with 300hp. However, they also have an option unique to their models with the Formentor having a plug-in hybrid option while the Ateca has a 2.0L non-performance four-wheel drive option. If outright performance is a priority, the Formentor may have the edge, but the Ateca doesn't lag far behind.

Handling and Dynamics:

Both models benefit from Cupra's expertise in creating engaging driving experiences. The Formentor, with its lighter and more compact build, offers sharper handling and a more nimble feel on the road. On the other hand, the Ateca, although larger, surprises with its agility and responsiveness, especially considering its SUV classification. Whether you prioritize a nimble, agile drive or a more planted and stable feel, both Cupras deliver a rewarding experience.

Choosing between the Cupra Formentor and Cupra Ateca ultimately comes down to personal preferences and priorities. If you're drawn to avant-garde design, digital controls, a futuristic interior, and a slightly more aggressive performance, the Formentor might be your ideal match. On the other hand, if you value a more traditional SUV appearance, analogue controls, a spacious interior, and a well-rounded performance, the Ateca could be the SUV for you. Whichever you choose, both models represent the pinnacle of Cupra's commitment to blending style, performance, and practicality in the realm of sporty SUVs.
