The Volvo XC90 is the flagship SUV in Volvo's line-up, combining seven-seat practicality with premium comfort and a refreshingly understated approach to luxury.
The latest version builds on the XC90 we already know, with updated styling, plenty of technology and a powerful plug-in hybrid option that might surprise you.
We recently spent some time with the range-topping T8 Black Edition Ultra, finished in Vapour Grey and sitting on a set of massive 21-inch gloss black alloy wheels.
It's a seriously smart-looking combination, giving the XC90 plenty of road presence without feeling too over the top.
Practicality and interior space
Being a large family SUV, practicality is obviously a big consideration, and the XC90 delivers.
There's a useful amount of boot space even with the third row of seats in place, making it a practical option for families who regularly need all seven seats.
Passengers are well looked after too, with plenty of room throughout the cabin and heated Nappa leather seats in the back.
It's the kind of interior that manages to feel both comfortable and luxurious without sacrificing everyday usability.
Premium comfort and technology
Things get even more luxurious when you move into the front.
The seats are heated and ventilated, with a massage function that makes longer journeys that bit more comfortable.
The dashboard features Volvo's signature portrait infotainment screen, complete with Google Maps and Google Assistant built in.
There's also a digital driver display and head-up display, keeping important driving information easily accessible.
It's a cabin that feels premium without being unnecessarily complicated, something Volvo has become particularly good at.
Plug-in hybrid performance
Our XC90 was the T8 plug-in hybrid, offering up to 41 miles of electric-only driving and a combined output of 406hp.
That power figure might sound surprising for something this big, but it certainly translates into an impressive driving experience.
We found the XC90 considerably punchier than expected, with the electric side of the powertrain adding to its responsiveness.
The plug-in hybrid system also means shorter journeys can potentially be completed using electric power alone, helping reduce petrol use when the battery is sufficiently charged.
It's an interesting combination of everyday efficiency and genuinely impressive performance.
Volvo XC90 pricing
Prices for the Volvo XC90 start at around £74,000, rising to approximately £88,000 for the range-topping Black Edition Ultra.
That puts it firmly in premium SUV territory, competing for attention with some well-established luxury alternatives.
But with its seven-seat practicality, generous equipment, luxurious interior and powerful plug-in hybrid system, there's plenty to consider.
The question is whether you'd choose the understated luxury of the Volvo XC90 over something like a Range Rover.
