VW and Microsoft team up on Self-driving Cars
01 March 2021Further strengthening of the working relationship between the Volkswagen Group and Microsoft, who have been working together since 2018 on VW’s Automotive Cloud.
The enhanced partnership is to help develop autonomous-driving technology and both parties will work together to create a cloud-based autonomous-driving platform.
VW's software house, called the Car.Software organisation, will be the collaboration partner on behalf of the whole VW Group, with a pledge from VW Group to invest £23.7 billion into digitisation by 2025 and an aim to increase the amount of software built in-house from 10% to 60%.
The two companies currently work together on Volkswagen’s Automotive Cloud, a service which provides over-the-air software updates, that could bring new features and generic software updates which usually happen when the vehicle goes to the dealer for servicing. Other user-centric services will also be included, such as multimedia streaming.
The Automotive Cloud fleet will be the first to start testing the new co-developed technologies, before a full roll-out to production vehicles some time in 2022.
