The moments after any accident can feel overwhelming. Here's what you need to do, in order.
1. Make Sure Everyone Is Safe
Before anything else, check for injuries. If anyone is hurt or the road is blocked, call 999 immediately. Switch on your hazard lights, move to a safe position if you can, and do not leave the scene. This applies whether you're driving a leased car or not.
2. Exchange Details and Document the Damage
Once everyone is safe, gather the information you'll need for any insurance or leasing company communications:
- Full name, address, and contact details of all other drivers involved
- Vehicle registration numbers, make, model and colour
- Insurance details of all parties
- Names and contact details of any witnesses
- Time, date and location of the accident
- Photographs of all damage to every vehicle, as well as the wider scene
Strong photo documentation is particularly important with a leased vehicle, as it gives you clear evidence of the extent of any damage at the time of the incident, and protects you if questions arise later when the car is returned. If the details of the other driver cannot be exchanged, report the collision to the police as soon as possible and within 24 hours.
3. Contact Your Insurance Provider
Notify your insurer as soon as possible after the accident, even if you don't intend to make a claim. Most policies require prompt notification of any incident, and failing to report it, even a minor one, can invalidate your cover entirely. When you first took out insurance on your leased vehicle, you should have declared that it is a lease car, as the finance company rather than you is the registered keeper. Make sure your insurer has this on record.
4. Contact Your Leasing Company
This is a step that's easy to overlook but is non-negotiable. Your lease agreement includes a requirement to report any accident or damage to us or whoever your chosen leasing company is, even if it seems minor. Get in touch as soon as possible after your insurance provider, explain what happened, and follow the specific guidance on next steps, including where the vehicle should be repaired. Failing to report damage can result in additional charges when the car is eventually returned.
If you have any questions about your obligations at any point, the team at Leasing Options is available to help you navigate the process.
