The official name for road tax/car tax is Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). It is a yearly tax, paid to be able to use or park on the road and can be paid in monthly instalments, annually or every six months.
The amount of VED each vehicle pays is based on exhaust pipe CO2 emissions. There is a banding system in place, which has a varying price from £0 a year for vehicles in band A, raising incrementally to £515 for a band M vehicle that have CO2 emission of 255g/km or more.
