For this model, the brand has upped the styling ante with a range of smart exterior features, including exaggerated grilles and curved headlights. Moving into the electric era, the Austral is powered by a self-charging 1.2-litre petrol engine and is complemented by two electric motors. You only have the choice of one engine size at the moment. But this is pretty impressive, offering 200hp and 410Nm of torque. Alongside this, there’s the choice of three model variants – Techno, Techno Esprit Alpine and Iconic Esprit Alpine. Inside the Austral is similar to the Megane E-Tech in terms of styling. You get a variety of textures and materials, including a leather square-like steering wheel. Overall, it feels plush even with the plastic finishes. Every version of this model comes with three large driver display screens – a 9.3-inch head-up display, a 12-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch driver’s instrument display, which is customisable. Google has partnered with Renault for this system, so it’s simple to use. But you also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, depending on your preferred connectivity. 

Space-wise, this model is a favourite for families as it’s practical and there’s ample room for drivers and passengers. The top-spec trim has a moveable bench seat, which can adapt to the space needed. However, this does affect boot space if you move it backwards. Standard capacity is 430 litres, slightly smaller than some SUVs. However, moving the bench seat forward provides up to 555 litres if needed. 

The Austral is also a popular choice for safety, scoring top marks by Euro NCAP. There are up to 30 advanced driver assistance systems and ISOFIX fittings for up to three car seats.
