Sales of SUVs may be rising but us Brits still love our estate cars. Offering great practicality with large loading spaces and better driving dynamics than most larger cars, wagons are a great choice for families of all shapes and sizes. We've chosen our favourites below, the best estate car lease deals for 2018.

Skoda Superb

Skoda Superb Estate

If you're looking for an estate car, interior space is no doubt paramount and the Skoda Superb Estate is genuinely cavernous on the inside- we're talking 1,950 litres with the seats down. Despite its low price when compared to the closest rivals, this wagon trumps most other things in the sector when it comes to boot capacity and room for your passengers. Of course size isn't everything though, and this Skoda delivers in plenty of other ways too. There's a touchscreen infotainment system as standard, great safety features and a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines depending on your requirements. Is this the best estate car available right now?

BMW 5 Series Touring

BMW 5 Series Touring

As you might hope, the 5 Series Touring is everything you’d expect from BMW’s revered range - but with more room for junk in the trunk of course. This car is great fun to drive, which isn’t something you’ll always get with a wagon, but it’s comfortable too and would perform brilliantly on long journeys. The Beemer is no slouch either, even the base spec 520d model is good for 0-62mph in a sprightly 7.8 seconds. Inside, the level of refinement is similarly impressive, with beautifully smart trims and as well as a 10.25 inch touchscreen as standard. With fantastic looks and brilliant practicality the 5 Series Touring is tough to beat by any measures.

Volkswagen Passat Estate

Volkswagen Passat Estate

As with most VWs, the Passat Estate fits nicely just below the most premium offerings in the sector but is superior to almost everything else available. There is plenty in common with stablemate the Superb, though that is of course no bad thing, the Skoda does offer slightly more interior space though. With its horizontal grille the Volkswagen is arguably a more handsome vehicle than the Superb but that is of course a matter of opinion. The Passat is a highly competent, practical and sensible choice for your next estate, though it probably won’t deliver many thrills and spills or glitz and glamour to the party.

Volvo V90

Volvo V90

Volvo used to be the go to manufacturer for estate cars, and the new V90 goes some way to reclaiming their wagon-king title. This car oozes class. From the beautifully designed cabin, through to the gorgeous inverted grille and Thor's hammer headlights, Volvo have designed a genuinely appealing machine. True the ride isn't as thrilling as it could be, but if comfort is the aim the V90 does the job better than most in its class- the refined interior is a lovely place to be. Under the bonnet you can choose from a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. Volvo have definitely built one of the best estate cars available now.

Mercedes E-Class Estate

Mercedes E-Class Estate

File this one under superb for luxury and practicality. The E-Class undoubtedly has the elegant refinement you'd expect from a Merc both inside and out, but there is loads of space too, with the seats down you're looking at a ginormous 1,820 litres. On the road this car's a great choice as well, with frugal diesel engines capable of delivering 67 mpg or the choice of petrol V8 that will get from 0 to 62mph in just 3.6 seconds. This may not be the most fun to drive car in the class but it's probably the most comfortable and has more than enough in the locker to make our list of best estates for 2018.

Audi A6 Avant

Audi A6 Avant

Fully updated for 2018, the all-new A6 gets an estate version which uses Audi’s Avant nomenclature. As with the saloon, this eighth generation model features all the latest safety and entertainment technology and counts the E-Class and 5 Series as its main competitors. Working in the Audi’s favour is a generous amount of standard kit; we’re talking front and rear LED lights, a 12.3 inch virtual cockpit display to complement the central infotainment screen and parking sensors on all models. The BMW is better to drive and the E-Class is a little more refined but this Audi is a great choice if you’re looking for a real all-rounder.

SEAT Leon ST

SEAT Leon ST

Another entry to this list from the VAG group, SEAT have taken their highly popular Leon and for the first time created an estate version, dubbed the ST or Sports Tourer. The latest generation Leon is smart and sportily stylish with a great choice of engines and the Spanish marque have kept the hatchback’s spirit intact with this wagon. That makes this versatile vehicle one of the most fun to drive estates around with a great choice of engines to suit any requirements, from the pacy Cupra 300 version to the frugal 1.6 TDI. The SEAT Leon ST is good enough to knock its stablemate the Golf Estate off this list, which is very high praise indeed.

Peugeot 308 SW

Peugeot 308 SW

Peugeot’s award-winning 308 hatchback gets the estate treatment and the French brand deliver one of the best compact wagons on the road. Out of the smaller cars on this list it has class leading space in the boot thanks to a slightly elongated wheelbase. Thankfully though that stretched body hasn’t impacted the ride and whilst the 308 isn’t a sporty proposition, it offers refined performance and comfort even over longer journeys. The Peugeot’s real trump card comes at the pump though, where weight saving and efficient engines make this one of the least thirsty vehicles on this list.

Kia Optima Sportswagon

Kia Optima Sportswagon

Kia are on a bit of a roll. They’ve reinvented themselves with a slew of handsome new vehicles carrying seriously competitive price tags and the Optima Sportswagon yet is another compelling car from the South Korean manufacturer. In fact we think this Kia is one of the best looking vehicles in the class, but it’s not just a pretty piece of metal either, the Optima Sportswagon is a truly accomplished machine. There’s a generous amount of standard kit with a colour touchscreen on all models and the boot is one of the largest amongst its peers, plus fuel economy is some of the best on offer too. Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Undoubtedly one of the best looking estates we’ve ever seen, Jaguar pulled out all the stops with the second generation XF Sportbrake. This model arrived a couple of years after the saloon is arguably even more desirable than the standard version. It’s practical too, offering one of the longest load bays in the class and 1,700 litres of space with seats folded flat. If this Jaguar has an achilles heel it’s up front. Cabin refinement isn’t where it could be and technology doesn’t stand up to the car’s premium competitors. All in all though the Jaguar XF Sportbrake is an attractive package, click the link below to browse our latest lease deals.
