Driving a BMW X3

Now in its third generation, BMW’s popular mid-sized SUV makes a great choice for motorists looking for a luxurious but practical vehicle that drives with real poise and purpose.

Ride and handling

Always a strong suit for BMWs, the X3 really excels against its competition when it comes to ride and handling. Whilst most SUVs will sacrifice a good amount of agility and control, owing to a taller frame and extra weight, you will no doubt be impressed by how this nimble car retains balance on the road and even off it, offering a supremely sporty performance. With regard to options under the hood, you’ll find two petrol as well as two diesel options to choose between, depending on your requirements to balance power and fuel economy. All are extremely competent and reliable.

Styling

The latest X3 is actually larger than the original X5, demonstrating a move towards bigger is better that seems to show no sign of abating any time soon. Whatever the footprint though, we think you’ll agree this smart SUV is one of the best looking cars in its class and portrays modern sporty and muscular traits nicely.

Inside the cabin

The X3’s gorgeous cabin is more than a match for anything amongst rival luxury SUVs. The stylish, uncluttered and plush to the touch design feels every bit as luxurious as you would expect, and even the entry level model sees full leather seats.

This BMW is much more than just a pretty face though. You can expect the latest cutting-edge technology throughout, and will be well served by either a 6.5 or 10.3 inch infotainment screen, depending on your spec choice, both with high resolution and easily navigated by scroll-wheel. Sat nav comes as standard and there is also the option to include gesture control and a head up display if you so desire.

Practicality

Boot space in the BMW X3 matches both the Mercedes GL and Audi Q5, with a generous 550 litres on offer, which extends to 1,600 litres with the back seats down. The flat floor makes loading and unloading a cinch and there’s also an extra storage area underneath the boot floor – roomy enough for a little suitcase. The back row of seats is comfortable enough to seat two adults, although if you’re regularly planning on filling the whole row, looking for a larger vehicle may prove to be more practical.
