The New York motor show saw Chrysler display their new Jeep Grand Cherokee in a bid to prove to the new American Government and public that the company has a viable future.
Their hand has been forced recently by the American administration to produce more economically viable and environmentally considerate vehicles. The new Jeep Cherokee is expected to go on sale during the second quarter of 2010, although UK car leasing customers will have to wait until early 2011 before its introduction to the UK.
The Jeep looks a lot more modern than its predecessor with a lot of work going into its design and appeal to customers. The Grand Cherokee is based on a Mercedes-Benz ML platform and the whole concept was brought to life long before both Chrysler and Daimler parted company. The Grand Cherokee also introduces a new Chrysler V6, that will replace seven different V6's that it currently has in its range.
The new engine, a 3.6-litre, has some 276bhp and if that isn't enough there is also going to be a 5.7-litre V8 that produces a hearty 355bhp. The V6 will only be available with a five speed automatic gearbox however, although there will also be a diesel engine option when the Grand Cherokee arrives in the UK.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee has increased in size with both its width and length being added too. The positive side of the increases means that there is a lot more space inside with rear leg room being increased by over 10cm.
Chrysler in fact are making quite a big deal about the cars interior where they claim you will see huge steps forward from the old car. The all new design does look more modern and with some improvement in cabin quality being met as well its a comfortable environment to drive in. They have also added an easy method for adjusting the steering wheel that improves the driving position no end.
The Jeep also gets selectable air suspension that adjust the ride height depending on the conditions, for example the Quadra lift system lowers the car for motorway driving and can raise it by just under 30cm for those who wish to venture off-road. With a five-setting traction control system called Selec-Terrain car leasing customers will be able to choose from sand/mud, snow, sport, rock and automatic depending on the conditions.
.
In all it looks as though Chrysler has taken on board much of the criticism that has been aimed at the company with regards to its future viability. This new Jeep Grand Cherokee is a real stab at forcing their way back into the market.
