This autumn will see Land Rover enter new territory as it launches the company’s first ever two-wheel-drive car. It wont be any old Land Rover, in fact it will be an ultra-frugal version of its Range Rover coupe SUV, or LRX.
The new Golf-sized crossover will look to focus more on style opposed to full scale practicality. Areas such as the interior in particular will emphasise style and luxury in an effort to create a sheik space in which to drive. This will give car leasing customers the opportunity to get a closer look at what Land Rover are offering.
Land Rover had originally ruled out the possibility of a front-wheel-drive variant, arguing that its core brand values would be compromised by such an endeavour. However, the company now has to take back those words as they realise that the two-wheel-drive SUV segment is too popular to ignore. Although such a variant wont be available at launch it is expected to follow shortly afterwards according to company sources.
All versions of the LRX are expected to use a version of the Freelander’s drivetrain along side a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. This will make the LRX the first manual Range Rover since the second generation model replaced in 2002.
The Front-wheel-drive version is expected to head up the frugal range of vehicles and be capable of emitting just 130g/km of CO2, although the four-wheel-drive models will emit an impressive 140g/km.
